Do you know that you were created to have fellowship with your Creator-God Almighty-and that He desires to have a relationship with you that is closer than anyone you know on earth?

You may have heard that before. But the real question is do you care that God wants a relationship with you? Most people don't because they don't see the benefit of a "relationship" with God. People are inherently selfish; they enter relationships based on what the other individuals in the relationship can do for them. That is basic human nature. And most people don't care to have a relationship with God because they believe that their temporal pleasures (i.e. sins) are more beneficial and enjoyable right now. And it may appear to be so; but unlike the benefits of having a relationship with God, all sin has a very dark secret: sin will eventually take you down a path you didn't want to travel. It will lead you into the very pit of hell itself. Everyone who doesn't have a real relationship with the Lord has a sin problem-and by extension, has a signed ticket to a reserved seat in the smoking section (hell) for all eternity. Very simply, our love of sin keeps us from loving God-and God will not compete with anyone or anything. We have to be totally sold out for Him. It may sound drastic, and it is, but is it worth everything we think we are leaving for a real relationship with a God who is the epitome of love.

So what if we want to truly have a relationship with our Creator? How do we conquer this sin problem that separates us from Him? First we have to understand the definition of sin. Sin is simply anything that keeps us from an authentic relationship with God. Sin can be lying, lusting, murder, or even something we might consider to be inconsequential, like watching too much TV; again, sin is anything that will keep us from entering or maintaining our relationship with God. And we have all sinned (Rom. 3:23).

No one is good enough to come to a perfect God on his or her own merits. There is not one person who hasn't told a lie. There isn't one person who hasn't thought a bad thought about someone else. There isn't one person who can honestly say that they have put God first place in everything they do. And this is only three of the Ten Commandments. We would be found guilty if we died today and God judged us by His moral law. We would be sentenced to hell-a place of eternal damnation, because we offended an eternal God. That is why we need a perfect, sinless, and eternal Savior; His name is Jesus Christ. God sent His Son to earth 2,000 years ago to take the punishment of our sin because only He could take it. It might be best understood like this: All of us have committed a crime against God. Because God is perfect and loving, He must serve justice on all who have committed crimes against Him. No one can pay their own punishment because God is perfect and holy and all of us are blemished and corrupt. Only perfection can rectify perfection. This is why He sent Himself to earth-God with a flesh suit on-Jesus Christ, to be the pardon for our sins. Jesus came to die on the cross to pay the perfect punishment.

Once we understand this fact in our head, we then have to let it soak into our heart. What we must do is accept Christ's substitutionary sacrifice by faith and put our trust in Him the rest of our days on earth. We must begin by starting a relationship with Him. And the first step is to accept His invitation to begin the relationship. Then we have to repent (turn from our sin and walk toward Him). We also need to read His love letter to us-the Bible-daily. Finally, we need to establish a personal link with Him through prayer.

The Bible says that in order to start this relationship that we should open our mouth and tell Him that we believe in our heart that He died on the cross for our sins and taking the punishment that was due us (Rom. 10:9-10). When we do this, we have stepped over the demolished barrier that has kept us from a relationship with our Creator. God did His part 2,000 years ago. We must do our part by accepting and believing in Him. Then we must walk away from everything we know is not pleasing to God. Most of us probably already know what those things are because our very conscience tells us when we are not pleasing to Him. It is also imperative that you get involved in a good, Bible believing church that teaches repentance, faith in Christ and teaches the Word of God on a regular basis.  Finally, you'll want to share what has happened to you with others, so they can be reconnected to their Creator.
